Mogherini visit boost for EU-Iran cooperation

(TEHRAN) – EU cooperation with Iran was given a boost over the weekend with the visit by EU foreign affairs representative Federica Mogherini to Tehran, where the two sides committed to implementing the action plan agreed in Vienna last year.

The delegation, which included Internal Market Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska, Violeta Bulc, in charge of Transport, and Miguel Arias Canete, Commissioner with responsibility for climate change and energy issues, explored various sectors of cooperation with Iran, including:

  • economic relations,
  • energy, environment,
  • migration,
  • drugs,
  • humanitarian aid,
  • transport,
  • civil protection,
  • science and civil nuclear cooperation,
  • culture.

Regional and human rights issues also formed part of the agenda.

The two sides welcomed implementation day of the join action plan agreed on 16 January that contributed to the opening of a new chapter in EU-Iran relations.

In a statement, the EU and Iran said they were fully committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its implementation in all its aspects.
 
It was agreed to send an EU liaison team to Tehran, with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of relations and implementing of  future cooperation initiatives.
