The Brexit sequel opened in the United States this week, to shock and concern from many on this side of the Atlantic – a “difficult moment in the relationship between the United States and the European Union”, was how EU Parliament chief Martin Schulz put it, as he offered Mr Trump the “full respect” of the EU institutions.

EU leaders will however be anxious about transatlantic relations, particularly the TTIP trade deal, and look to strengthen cooperation on our common challenges. Whether president-elect Trump sees it that way remains to be seen.
