Publisher’s Note
================
One thing has already been made clear by Britain’s new
coalition government: the UK will not join or prepare to
join Europe’s single currency, according to a joint policy
agreement published on Wednesday. Other ramifications with
regard to EU-UK relations are not so certain, however.
Congratulating new prime minister David Cameron, Commission
president Barroso looked forward to “a good working
relationship”. The challenges facing Britain, he said, are
shared by Europe’s partners – economic recovery, climate
change and energy security.
Many in Europe also share another hope: that the coalition’s
eurofriendly Liberal Democrats will neutralise the euro-
sceptic tendencies of some of their Conservative partners.

Comment
——-
Commenting on our piece “Euro-MPs urge more time for
combustion plants to comply with emission limits”, Mike
Parr writes:
“Some power station operators have decided not to fit a
system (called Boosted Over Fire Air) which would allow
coal-fired stations to meet the obligations of the Large
Combustion Plant Directive […] the above makes one wonder
why any extension to the LCPD is needed. The technology is
available, it is not very difficult to fit, is made and
supplied by European companies (thus benefitting Euro
industry). Where is the problem?”
