Today’s European Antibiotic Awareness Day is a timely reminder of the global health threat of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and its severe social and economic implications. Inaction could cost an estimated 10 million deaths globally per year, as well as a cumulative loss of over EUR 88 trillion to the world economy by 2050.

A reminder also of the need for coordinated international action, for the EU to step up its own efforts, and for its Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, set for 2017, to match the scale of the problem.
