Publisher’s Note
================
Madrid was the venue for a ‘European Tourism Stakeholders
Conference’ this week, organised to explore ways of
boosting Europe’s tourism sector. This exploits a Lisbon
Treaty clause which outlines, for the first time, a specific
EU competence in tourism, allowing decisions to be taken by
qualified majority.

Tourism – which generates over 5% of the EU’s GDP and around
9.7m jobs – has been one of Europe’s most resilient sectors
through the economic crisis. It also has significant
potential to generate future growth and employment. The hope
is that the conference will smooth the path for a co-
ordinated European approach on tourism policy initiatives.
