In a guest blog this week, Philip Stevens argues that new Commission proposals to weaken intellectual property protections will hamper innovation. The measures aim to help Europe’s generics industry, but this will struggle to be competitive in the long term with the likes of India and China where production costs are much lower. Mr Stevens warns against the EC’s ‘precautionary, risk-averse attitude to regulation’, which he says has chilled investment in innovative sectors such as chemical and agricultural biotechnology, and is currently holding back Europe’s role in the Artificial-Intelligence based “Fourth Industrial Revolution”.

The Commission cleared all Indonesian air carriers from the EU Air Safety list Thursday, as it introduced a warning system for air traffic controllers to prevent unsafe aircraft entering European airspace.

Parliament has given the green light to a reduction in MEP numbers from 751 to 705, if the United Kingdom leaves the EU, leaving room for new countries that may join in future.
