The surprise victory of Prime Minister David Cameron at the UK’s general election has led to a chorus of concerned voices about the chances of a ‘Brexit’ from the EU. Business people especially have voiced their fears about losing the benefits of membership, and the damage to the UK economy.
There are signs, though, that if Mr Cameron can get some results on renegotiation, a referendum might be brought forward to 2016, cutting short battles on two fronts — in Brussels and against the eurosceptics in his own camp.
