    This Week’s Top Stories
    =======================
    1. EU eyes Asia trade pacts after landmark Sth Korea deal
    2. EU favours financial transactions tax globally
    3. US warns Europe of persistent terror threat
    4. Euro-MPs reject deepwater drilling ban call
    5. Galileo satnav system over budget, late: report
    6. Anti-GM crop petition tops million signatures

    Publisher’s Note
    ================
The approach of the flagship ‘Innovation Union’ unveiled by
the Commission this week would focus EU research efforts on
key challenges like climate change, energy and food
security, health and the ageing population. The package
addresses obstacles to ideas getting to market such as lack
of finance, fragmented research systems, under-use of public
procurement for innovation and slow standard setting.

Research is a vital element of innovation. But there is some
concern that the Communication’s emphasis on research is too
strong. Innovation is not just about scientific
breakthroughs, says EUROCHAMBRES chief Arnaldo Abruzzini.
    “Strengthening Europe’s entrepreneurial eco-system and
empowering more people to see themselves as innovators is
    equally important.”

    2. EU favours financial transactions tax globally
    ————————————————-
The Commission has backed a financial transactions tax at

    3. US warns Europe of persistent terror threat
    ———————————————-

    4. Euro-MPs reject deepwater drilling ban call
    ———————————————-
The European Parliament has rejected calls to ban deepwater

    5. Galileo satnav system over budget, late: report
    ————————————————–
Europe’s Galileo satellite navigation system, meant to rival

    6. Anti-GM crop petition tops million signatures
    ————————————————
More than one million signatures have been gathered in a
legal bid to “freeze” GM crop cultivation in the European
Union, but a Brussels official says the complaint will be
    passed to “political” advisers.
