    This Week’s Top Stories
    =======================
    1. Eurozone unity urged as jobless, inflation soar
    2. EU urges Germany to stimulate domestic demand
    3. EU bans Philippines, Sudan airlines over safety concerns
    4. New EU system to take on excise fraud
    5. EU subsidies ‘have encouraged overfishing’
    6. Europeans want to keep subsidising farmers: poll

    Publisher’s Note
    ================
Europe received two cautions from outside bodies this week:
first, a warning from the head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-
Kahn that Europe is in danger of being relegated to the
second division of world economic powers – with the United
States and Asia bouncing quicker out of the global downturn.
The EU needs to act swiftly, he added, and competitiveness,
innovation and better policy coordination are the key.
    http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/imf-us-asia-romania.3xv

Second, WTO chief Pascal Lamy urged the EU to speak with one
voice at June’s G20 summit in Toronto, focusing on concerns
that the new Lisbon institutional set-up is not working. “If
one European takes the floor, and then another… nobody
listens.” Europe, he says, is more effective when it speaks
with one voice. Few could argue with that.

    1. Eurozone unity urged as jobless, inflation soar
    ————————————————–
Unemployment in the eurozone has hit record highs and

    2. EU urges Germany to stimulate domestic demand
    ————————————————
The Commission has called on Germany to stimulate demand in
its domestic private sector, amid concern that Europe’s

    3. EU bans Philippines, Sudan airlines over safety concerns
    ———————————————————–

    4. New EU system to take on excise fraud
    —————————————-
A new electronic system for monitoring the movement of
excise goods within the EU became operational on 1 April.
The Excise Movement and Control System should make intra-EC
trade in excise goods cheaper and simpler for operators and
make it easier for Member States to tackle excise fraud.

    5. EU subsidies ‘have encouraged overfishing’
    ———————————————
EU fisheries subsidies have encouraged overfishing over the
years and helped maintain an over-capacity in the industry,
according to a study published on Wednesday.

    6. Europeans want to keep subsidising farmers: poll
