    Publisher’s Note
    ================
    Poorer pensioners, higher pension contributions or more
    people working more and longer: this is the choice facing
    Europe’s governments, set out in a Commission Green Paper
    on the future of pensions this week.

    Pension reform is Europe’s biggest challenge. The average
    retirement age of 61.4 years, compared to 65 for workers in
    the United States and 70 in Japan, is not sustainable in
    the long term, and the financial and economic crisis only
    adds to the strain. With the number of retired people
    compared to those financing their pensions forecast to
    double by 2060, the pressure for reform is truly on.
