    3. Sugar companies big winners from CAP subsidies

    Publisher’s Note
    ================
    The European Parliament’s environment committee has rejected
    a proposal to allow food from cloned animals and their
    offspring onto the European market. The legislation would
    authorise the sale of “novel foods” using algae or plankton,
    nanotechnology, with genetically modified crops or cloned
    animals, such as sheep.

    However, research organisation Testbiotech says such
    material is already on the market, warning of animal welfare
    and segregation problems. The market needs “transparency for
    consumers and farmers”, they say. MEPs have now called on
    the Commission to draw up a separate text to deal with the
    subject of cloned animals and keep it out of the larger
    legislation on non-standard foods.
