Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker promised his executive would focus on “the big things that really matter to our citizens”. A Joint Declaration on EU legislative priorities for 2018-2019, signed this week by the three EU institutions, sets out priority legislative proposals including security, migration and jobs.

Citizens will also be looking for progress on a robust trade policy, tax fraud and tax evasion and ensuring social rights. Perhaps the most important commitment is “to stay united in the interests of Europeans”.
