    The European Parliament gave a red light to plans for the European Central Bank to install Luxembourg’s Yves Mersch to a key European Central Bank post this week. This follows a series of exchanges over the representation of women at the top level of European political and business institutions.

    The MEPs’ stand came after Council President Herman Van Rompuy failed to use his presence in plenary on Tuesday to offer concrete commitments regarding gender balance. The success of Parliament’s protest is in highlighting Council intransigence in failing to commit to a better gender balance within what is effectively Europe’s most powerful financial institution.
