Publisher’s Note

Patients increasingly want to know more about the medicines they take, and to have more of a say in how they are treated. But reliable information, especially on the Internet, is not easy to come by. The Commission this week adopted proposals to clarify the information that industry can supply to the public on prescription-only medicines.

The revised proposals maintain a current advertising ban on prescription-only medicines. They also set quality criteria for the information, and limit the type of information allowed, as well as in which media it may be displayed.

The new proposals “put rights, interests and safety of patients first”, says the Commission. Whether patients will be keen to have information limited to ‘officially registered internet websites’ remains to be seen.
