    Publisher’s Note

The European Parliament in plenary this week voted for tighter rules for Europe’s growing output of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE).

With the EU recycling only 20% of WEEE generated, and much of it leading to illegal export and improper treatments, MEPs proposed new targets for collecting, recycling and re-using waste, and recommended tougher measures to prevent the export of e-waste to developing countries.

The European Environmental Bureau says MEPs have “grasped the important potentials of the WEEE legislation to change our e-waste management”. For its part, SME organisation UEAPME also welcomes the limits on collection duties for micro retailers. It looks like MEPs have got it about right.
