    When Latvia’s first ever EU presidency began on 1 January, the focus was on Russia’s expansionist foreign policy, Europe’s economy and Greece’s economic and political woes.

    It has been a tough six months. But the presidency has been a big moment in Latvia’s history. It has been a model president, and can point to successes on energy security, data protection, abolishing roaming charges, open internet access and the Eastern Partnership summit. Latvia handed over the presidency to Luxembourg on 1 July.
