    No great outpouring of support for Europe’s farmers last month, when nearly 5,000 of them spent the day in Brussels protesting about falling dairy and meat prices. Yet they are under pressure, from a Russian ban on EU food imports, lower demand from China, and over-supply on the domestic market.

    A EUR 500m Commission package to support dairy farmers will be of some help. But key issues are how the sector can handle and adapt to price volatility, what safety nets are in place, and how the industry can move itself up the value chain, and diversify its trading partners.
