    With concerns mounting over the state of democracy in Turkey, MEPs this week debated options for future relations with the long-standing candidate for EU membership.

    Many MEPs made a distinction between Turkey’s leadership and those for whom the EU remains an anchor for reforms. But for many, full EU membership is no longer a realistic option.

    EP president Tajani warned against closing the door to the Turkish people. However, Europe could not look the other way when events proceed in the opposite way of European construction,” he said, citing press freedom and the death penalty as “inviolable” red lines.
